Gord Benko is a cancer survivor, who is participating in a 60 km walk over two days in July as part of a fund raising effort to help eliminate cancer. Many will remember Gord from his days in Whitehorse Ident, at Mayo Detachment and with the “M” Division CIB office. Here is a link to Gord’s personal letter asking for support and a link to his web page where an on-line donation may be made.

Regimental #11195 - Retired Sgt. Ivor A. Mast passed away April 3, 2009 in Richmond, BC. Ivor was born in 1909 and joined the RCMP in 1931. He trained at “Depot” Division. Following training he was transferred to Fort Smith, NWT. Because he had experience with dog teams and outboard motors he was designated an Engineer and was responsible for water transport in the summer months and dog teams in the winter. He served at Fort Good Hope. He made winter patrols by dog-sled to Resolution, Reliance, Rae, Hay River, Providence and Outpost Island Detachments. He was promoted Sergeant while at ‘Depot” Division in 1944. He was the NCO i/c Mayo Detachment at the time of his retirement. After retirement he took employment as a Guard at Whitehorse Detachment, YT. He also was employed by Prospector Airways.
Ivor Mast was considered a legend in the north and a heritage building called “Mast House” at 209 Elliot Street, Whitehorse is named after him. He was a life member of the RCMP Veteran’s Association, Vancouver Division. The family have requested the presence of an Honour Guard at his memorial service. The service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, April 18th, 2009 at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, 9887 Cameron Street, Burnaby, B.C.
December 6/08‘Harry the Bear’ Mascot’s First Public Appearance
The Yukon RCMP Veterans’ Association mascot, ‘Harry the Bear’ made his first public appearance today. He participated in the Winterlude Parade in Whitehorse, accompanied by his handler, Lynn Lebarge, and Yukon RCMP Vets President, Hank Moorlag.
People were very happy to meet ‘Harry’, especially the children who were fascinated by him. ‘Harry’ was generous with his hugs and ‘high fives’.
‘Harry’ was also accompanied by the Yukon RCMP Safety Bear. We refer to ‘Harry’ as the Safety Bear’s retired ‘Uncle’.
Everyone looks forward to more appearances by ‘Harry’, especially at the Sourdough Rendezvous celebration and, of course, at Northern Nite and the RCMP Vets AGM in May.
See photos of ‘Harry’ by clicking on the Photo Album tab at the top of the web page.
